What's it about?
Jail Guitar Doors is an independent initiative that aims to provide instruments to those who are using music as a means of achieving the rehabilitation of prison inmates. Founded by Billy Bragg in 2007, it takes its name from the b-side of the Clash’s 1978 single ‘Clash City Rockers’.
Why should I care?
Our prison system is over-full and under funded. As a result, re-offending is at an unacceptably high level. Jail Guitar Doors believes that, as citizens, it is in our interest to help those who are seeking to change the lives of offenders while they are in our custody.
What can I do?
It costs less than £500 to equip a prison with half a dozen acoustic guitars. Jail Guitar Doors relies on donations from fellow musicians, old Clash fans and citizens who want their prison system to do more than just lock people up and throw away the key.
