I had to resurrect this thread because I've just been to our local shop and seen these:
Nolan
There is something very wrong with ice-cream flavour crisps.I've just opened them, the smell is terrible,I can't put one in my mouth..............eugh I just did.

Trust me,these things are not nice.
Steve Andrews
The Two Ronnies could sue Walkers. I have a vague childhood Christmas recollection of a shop, raspberry-ripple crisps and salt and vinegar ice cream.
Maria
I thought the baked bean flavor was a disgusting enough idea.

Martyn has just looked over my shoulder and laughed so hard at the idea of ice cream flavor crisps that hurt my ear.
He says "At last! A thread of [classic Nolan-esque] quality!"
Beryl the Peril
i ate loads of baked bean crisps and i am not generally a crisp person apart from the ones with little bags of salt so you can have them saltless.

i do miss potato puffs from my school days but i haven't seen them since a chance encounter in an east finchley corner shop in 1977

as for vanilla munchsters or whatever ... unimaginable!
Martyn
Me too!

Only uesterday I opened a packet of Ex-Smiths, now Walkers crisps and decided to actually try them with the salt from the little blue packet.
Damn me if the first few tasted like crap because they were too salty and the rest tasted of nothing because the first few had buggered up my taste buds.

And before anybody reminds me I DID shake the bag. But the crisps are so greasy the salt sticks to whatever it lands on and then doesn't move. No matter how vigorously one waggles the bag.
Beryl the Peril
aha! i just throw away the salt.

when i was little and we only had smiths crisps i sometimes used to undo the twist of salt and stick my wet finger in and lick it but i have never sprinkled it on crisps.
nevski
at which point do u think they will intorduce the dog turd flavoured crisp?

oh they have.

beef and onion.
Martyn
You are mistaken most estimable Nevster.

The flavour to which you refer masquerades as Cheese and Onion.

Bleeeuuuugh! wacko.gif
Beryl the Peril
not to be confused with cat's pee aka salt and vinegar.
chezbarmy
Doritos and garlic dip is a favorite TV watching snack of myself and the strumpet that is Cheryl. biggrin.gif (along with a few cold beers). wink.gif

Quavers and wotsits are another top snack. tongue.gif

how dare u berate the cheese and bunion flaveur marty.

cheese and onion is created by beautiful maidens with whispy blonde hair, scantily clad and in need of a right good seeing too.
oh and muscle bound jocks with large appendages (right on)

however beef and onion are scraped up off the floor by maggot infested winos with syph.

And thats true that is.

i have also discovered this evening that thai geen curry flavour (NEW!) from tesco sucks the proverbial horses gonads too. basically, they are cocnut flavoured crisps.

if i wanted to taste coconut id go down to the fair and knock one off a pedestal.

rant over.

pass me the dandelion and burdock flavoured vodka.
Bingalls
This is what people talk about when they discuss English food (with horror). Not that a country that produces pork rinds in a bag to be microwaved has anything to talk about.

I was charmed by curry flavored crisps.

I love salt and vinegar
nevski
chip shop curry Walkers Max crisps rock my world.

good call Bing and all. wink.gif
Lizzie
I too love salt and vinegar chips. They especially rock when paired with bacon horseradish dip, and washed down with an ice cold beer.

In honor of cinquo de Mayo, I'd like some lime essence tortilla chips con mas margaritas!
Bingalls
I'm off to the store for a big bag. With luck I'll get home before the race starts.

I love the Kentucky Derby.
Martyn
I am about to help myself to a cold beer from our new fridge, a packet of twiglets from the huge bag on top of the new fridge and then after consuming aforementioned comestibles, fall asleep whilst pretending to be excited about the Spanish GP.
elliot
curry twiglets are good ...but the smell lingers on yer fingers for days

i have become extremely partial to salt and vinegar flavoured peanuts, bit like dry roasted but in a s&v stylee

slightly off topic but, i made the mistake of trying the new coca-cola brand with vanilla the other day. the verdict is the same as the monster munch. avoid if at all possible

is this the place to confess my custard cream addiction ????????
Sarah lady
I think you'd have to start a new thread for that BtheP!!
Walkers Cheese and Branston Pickle are my current favourites - yum!

This is why I only drink Coca-cola with blackcurrant in it - much to the annoyance of anyone who has to go to the bar to get me a drink!

No it isn't B the P.

Maria thinks you should be allowed to post stuff about custard creams here but this is the Maize or Potato snack thread and so far as I'm aware Custard Creams are not, nor have they ever been, made from either maize or potato.

If a biscuit must have cream in then chocolate bourbons would be the comestible of choice for me.
Otherwise a nice Sainsbury's economy chocolate digestive is hard to beat.

See!

See what you've done?

Maria
I believe someone mentioned twiglets on this thread not long ago.
If someone wants to be a stickler for details I think it is pertinent to mention that they are wheat based, aren't they?

and no one could blame you for that. they should be at the core of everyone's staple diet.
Beryl the Peril
tescos have an offer at the moment on maize and spud free bourbons and custard creams
Bingalls
I haven't had a single potato based food at all today, but I did make a pot of soup with black beans and white hominy, which was awesome. (and red peppers and yellow onions. my food is very colorful)

I really like the sound of those but they're not veggie so I'll have to imagine how lovely they taste.

Beef crisps are veggie but the cheese flavour ones aren't - how silly!

Why are Walkers unable to use rennet-free cheese powder when every other manufacturer manages perfectly well?
wilburpig
What shape would you like your snack?

yummy

They're not veggie? Oh brother - hadn't realised that....
Back to the drawing board...
Nolan
Oh brother indeed.

None of Walkers cheese crisps are veggie which rules out Square Crisps as well. mad.gif

Where did you find this info? I've had to stop eating chips/crisps with any kind of cheese because I can't get any answers (except that Whole Foods 365 brand uses animal rennet). I realize we're in different countries, but I figure however you found out might work for me in the U.S.

I know they taste rather fake, but my favorite English crisp are original flavoured Hoola Hoops.

Isn't Walkers the one where the only vegetarian crisp was their bacon flavored? We heard something about that on one of your brands here several months ago.
Martyn
Hi Heather.

Over here in wonderful marvelous Greaty Britain (as Idi Amin used to call it) all (almost) our food packaging comes with a little logo and the words "Suitable for vegetarians".

If it's suitable for veggies, that is.

Maria, who hails from Eugene, Oregon assures me that this is not the case in the US.
You poor things.

There are quite a few Veggie BBF members. You should start your own little thread or even have the Tobemeister set up a seperate forum where you can exchange recipes and such.

Only yesterday I was reading stuff on the Animal Action stall in Solihull.
Pretty much made up my mind to go 100% veggie.
Frankly I would have thought that the meat trade would by now after goodness knows how many years, got it's act together vis a vis animal welfare etc. Apparently not.
The perfectly dipicable acts carried out by humans to bring meat to the table is inexcusable.

On a lighter note...

Ginger and Banana Trifle.
(super vegan recipe)

6oz (170g) Vegan ginger buiscuits
Sainsbury's own are vegan (it says here)

2 medium sized Bananas

1 pkt veggie rasberry jelly or 2 pkts of "Quick-Jel" vegan jelly in red.

Custard made with a packet of powder and soya milk (quantity to suit taste)

2 oz (55g) flaked toatsed almonds, grated chocolate. for the top of the trifle.

Crush the biscuits, slice the nanas and make up the jelly according to the instructions on the pack.
Arrange a layer of biscuit (half the amount) in a medium sized dish and cover it with half the 'nanas.
Repeat until you've run out of biccy and nana.
Pour over the jelly. (if using Quick-Jel, keep warm until ready to use as it sets very quickly)

Leave to set.
When set pour over cooled custard and leave again to cool.
Before serving sprinkle with nuts and chocolate and other tasty stuff.

One last thing.
Let me know what its like cus I've never made it myself!

I'm on a mission these days telling everyone I know about this animal rennet thing. As recently as last fall -- when at dinner with Siobhan, a guy whose name I should remember but don't (whoever Sarah came with), among others -- and while they were discussing vegetarian cheese I had never heard of this before.

What's even worse over here than not marking things vegetarian (which I *really* wish they would do) is that many restaurants list something as vegetarian, but if you ask them about the cheese it either has animal rennet or they have no idea. It bugs the heck out of me that that appears to be legal.
Beryl the Peril
martyn. i'll pass that recipe on to EJB's mum. There is a vegan in EJB's little group of friends and it sounds like a lovely way of catering for her at parties.
Jeff-1
....did anyone mention Bugles yet?...I like the new super-cheesy cheddar version.
Jeff-1

Y'all have Doritos in England? Cool!
nevski
one has the munchies.

doritos it is.

just tried some walkers chicken tikka crisps. can't say they were very nice, can't say they tasted much like a curry either.

We must be the same age, hardly anyone ever remembers Golden Wonder baked bean flavour crisps, manna from heaven. The recent baked bean flavour Monster Munch were a travesty!

I too leave off the salt from the salt'nshake ones, but I have to disagree with you all over the ice-cream flavour Monster Munch, they taste like the cone of a 99 when it's been dripped on.

Alas, I'm allergic to maize, and, without going into too much detail, well, it's just not very nice ohmy.gif , so I can't eat Wotsits Wafflers, which are heavenly sad.gif
Martyn
My entire food intake today consisted of two drifters and two packets of Salt 'n' Shake without the salt.
From 02:08 until 17:30 that's all I ate.
The crisps were v.nice.
Martyn
I have gone off Twiglets.

funny you should say that, because all i've eaten since lunchtime is a big bowl of peanuts.

they were v. nice too
Beryl the Peril
i have never been 'on' twiglets. I bought salt and shake crisps this week. Alberr shakes the salt on but i eat them neat.

Cheesy Wotsits are our sons' favourite.

Due to this, they are our favourites also. smile.gif
aquaman
Cheesy Whotsit Waffles were in my local shop long enough for me to decide that I liked them...........then they stopped selling them sad.gif
nevski
I am dismayed by the lack of new flavours in the corn and potato based snack industry of late.

Avoid Herb and tomato flavured snack a jacks.
Wakarimasen
Salt'n'Vinegar is top-dog at the moment
